So, what happened in Berlin?

The team

Wow - what a team

Oh, what fun it was!

Ultimate Spinners sent a pretty small mixed team to the German capital, but they we’re all fierce and ready for a fight. Especially the girls were fired up, as it wasn’t a mixed tourney, so they would have their work cut out for them, playing mainly against guys.

The core-team was: Tamera, Lise, Strøm, Jan, Corrie, Vesters

Tam, Jan, Strøm and myself arrived in Berlin mid-day on Friday with the games starting Saturday. We went sightseeing and spent an hour in the jewish memorial site in the center of the city.
It’s always cool to have some time to hang out with your fellow ultimate freaks outside the field – remember that when you’re booking a ticket for a tournament!
We met up with the rest of the team later, where we partied with some other players in the tournament who lived in the city – coolness!

The fields we’re extremely cool located near the center of the city where Berlin had used some space for the old wall-site to make a huge sand-area for beach sports such as beach volley – but also ULTIMATE, baby! We camped just by the fields which was cool for transportation, but also meant sand EVERYWHERE…

The first game was against the host of the tournament, and they were pretty good, but we were better. The game was tied at about 5-5 when we got a little help from our first pickup-player. One of many.
Tuf from KFK came in and helped us get the win, and breaking the vicious circle of close games lost from Tom’s .

After that match we knew we would have to get some pickup-players for our team, if we we’re to get anywhere in this tournament, so the message was clear: “GO MAKE FRIENDS!”
And we did .. especially Corrie who got three awesome guys from Wall City to play with us, when they had breaks from their normal games. But we also got some help from “Bunnies” who sent Nadine (who we had graciously lent out), Birgit from Odense and Hanna from… well, Sweden. AND we got Franzi, yes, THE Franzi, who was playing for “Royal Copenhagen”..

With that amazing team, we played “The usual Suspects” from Switzerland whose morning-game we had seen and who had claimed respect. But we CRUSHED them. What a cool win!

But the games a small core team were beginning to take it toll, so we lost the next two games which were not really worth mentioning.

Great party by the fields on Saturday. We had loads of fun, and I think everybody made some new friends, which is THE SPINNERS WAY!

Okay, I’ll begin to wrap this up – but I have to describe the morning-game on Sunday. This one was one for the books… except I can’t remember our opponents name at the moment.

We we’re a little tired after a good party, but we came out to play (again, THE SPINNERS WAY).
They had only one girl on their team (most teams had a few), and they did not like to use her.. they weren’t going to let us off easy just because our team had a lot of sexy females on it.
When the time-cap was over the score was 11-7 in their favor, but Spinners would not give up.
Maybe because we didn’t really realize the score of the game (especially Lise, who I’m pretty sure didn’t know the score of any of our games until they were over). But we kept on fighting, and suddenly the score was 11-11 in the cap, and “the others” were of course in offense. The point became an epic battle of the discs and each team had a least 4 chances at getting the win, before the disc was thrown to Tam in the endzone, who didn’t get it… but Strøm played a perfect trashcan, and saved the disc for a truly amazing win!
The guys on the other team couldn’t believe it, and paid A LOT of respect to our team in the circle, and the girls in particular – which was totally deserved. (I mean every point Tam was laying out, Corrie got even faster, and Lise was catching everything.)
People from other teams came over after the game saying “Did you guys really win that one – awesome”. Ultimate-fame is the best fame!

- We lost the next one..

Then it was SADLY time for me to go home to Copenhagen to see the amazing “Flight Of the Conchords” so I can’t really write anymore (and if I do, my fingers will hurt).

I’m hoping some of the people who stayed behind will update this post with some details about the last party which I heard was fantabulous as always.
And also assist in thanking all the pickup-players we managed to get to play for us during the tournament. I hear the final count was 19 people playing for Spinners that weekend.

THE SPINNERS WAY:
- Good spirit, but on and outside the field
- The party is as much a part of Ultimate as the game!
- Most important: LOOK GOOD AT ALL TIMES!

Thanks for an amazing weekend the Spartan Spinners.

Kisses

Awesomeness! A truly inspiring post, Mr. V. Am beginning to hate the fact that I will not be able to play this beautiful sport for 3 months..
